Free range chickens and pork

We’ve finally got our first pork products back from the butcher and they are very tasty!  The sausage and bacon are really extraordinary, though I’m sure I’m biased.  This weekend we are also doing our first big slaughter day for our free range chickens and will have them available at around $3.50/lb.  The pork prices vary, if you are interested let me know.

First fruits of the garden

We are finally getting some products from our garden.  We have some nice spaghetti squash, zucchinis coming, peas, and some lettuce.  Unfortunately the garden is not doing nearly as well as hoped, partially because of the rain I am sure.  The amount of produce we will have available this year will not be as much as it will in subsequent years hopefully.  We will bring some to church on Sunday for anyone who wants some, or feel free to send us an email.

New chicks are here!

2014-05-11 18.46.23

Our new chicks for this year have arrived!  We have new egg layers, turkeys and meat birds, around 150 in all.  Our son Jacob just loves them!  We are planning on having them all free range, so our yard will get pretty lively once they’re old enough to wander about.  If you are interested in turkeys or chickens give us a call(204-289-2989) or email(info@durksenfarm.com) to order early and get prices.

Spring Bees

We rwpid-20140501_112601.jpgecently got our first bee colonies and are hoping they produce for us this year.  I am told that one hive can produce as much as 150 lbs of honey a year!  We initially had a problem with them not feeding on the sugar syrup enough to make combs for the queen to lay eggs, but have hopefully solved that with a thinner syrup mix and we will check them again to see if they are doing better in a few days.  The hope if that these bees will pollinate our garden and also give us honey, enough to sell as well.  We shall see…

New Pigs

Our sow, Olga, had her first litter a week ago: 3 healthy little Berkshire pigs!  They’re pretty cute, though not in the least cuddly.  They should be ready in 6-8 months for some good home grown pork products!  Let us know if you are interested.
